The weather looks perfect for the Papa Johns 10-Miler on Saturday morning. Christie says 8 a.m. race time temps are going to be in the upper 50's. Some like it cooler, but the warmer, the better for me.
I didn't run the very first 10-miler when it debuted 10 years ago. They only had 4,700 finishers that year, but last year the finishers ballooned to 7,022. My friends who ran the first one did nothing but complain about the race. So I was tainted when I ran it for the first time. I was shocked. I loved it.
I loved placing the Iroquois Park hills in the middle of the race. I loved the fact they kept the Southern Parkway neighborhood in play (something the Minimarathon no longer does). I loved finishing in the stadium, on the track. I loved seeing myself finishg on the jumbotron. And I loved being able to sit down in the intimate stadium setting to wait for my friends to finish.
But this year, they'll be waiting for me. Somehow, I got slow. I don't know how it happened. Maybe my body knows I'm turning 50 in May. But regardless, I'm going to enjoy this race, because it's a class act.
