Summer 2012 brought some new and interesting fashion trends. One of which is incorporating a crop top or bandeau into your wardrobe. But is this trend for everyone?
Fashion Designers make this trend look so appealing to the consumer with their waif thin models who are probably no older than 16, but is this trend appropriate for all women? Women in their 40s or older? Women who are less or more than stick-figures? For all body shapes?
What do you think?
As a Fashion Stylist I've seen it all and I believe there are far fewer "rules" of fashion today than in past times. That said, I still feel all women should follow some type of common guide to pull off the right mixture of style and sophistication, edge and elegance.
The crop top/bandeau is one of those trends that does not exist for the sake of all women in general. First of all, it is a trend that will pass in a short period of time. Secondly, it is a trend that is simply for the young and fit. Because of its structure, these tops show off the mid-section of a woman's body, even if paired with a jacket or sheer top, portions of the mid-section will be exposed. I'm not saying that is a terrible thing, but I'm saying that unless you are young and/or fit that look can be unattractive to the human eye.
I love curves, but feel every piece of clothing has a place and not every woman should wear whatever trend happens to be in season. The crop top/bandeau if worn correctly can be a cute, trendy look for a young woman in her upper teens to early thirties. Past that, I would recommend you choose something else. These tops speak "young". You may feel young into your 40s & 50s, but that is not always the way your body looks. Even with an extremely fit woman, who looks younger than she is, say in her 40's but looks like she is in her 30's should engage caution when thinking about this trend. Best advice - ask a stylish friend.
For those of you who can wear this trend, wearing the crop top with a pair of skinny jeans and heels truly makes a statement. Wearing a bandeau with either a sheer top and skinny jeans or a full skirt and jacket will be simply chic! I say, wear it while you can, but stear clear of it when you approach your mid to upper 30s. Ask yourself these questions before you "buy into" any trend:
* Does it make sense for my lifestyle?
* Is it age appropriate?
* Will I look like I'm trying to be my daughter if I wear it?
* Will I look like my mother if I wear it?
* Do I want to spend money on a trend that will be gone in a season or two?
* Do I absolutely have to rip it off the hanger & put it on my body?
If you ask yourself these questions with any piece your are contemplating, you will be better off in the long run!
