NOAA released some impressive temperature data yesterday. In case you were curious it has been warm for awhile. The first 6 months of the year the average temperature across the U.S. was 4.5 degrees above normal the warmest January-June period ever. For a 6 month period nationally that type of anomaly for that time and space is a huge number. There were 28 states east of the Rockies (including Kentucky and Indiana) that saw their warmest 6 month period. In addition the last 12 months have also been the warmest on record. It has not just been the last few weeks that have been hot.
Actually it has been warmer than normal nationally for over 18 months now. It is impressive considering we started using a new set of 30 year normals (1981-2010) about the time this heat began. That 30 year period is quite a bit warmer than the previous 30 year normal. There are signs with a developing El Nino this fall that this trend will break and if I am right you B.O.T.S fans will be rewarded this winter. Tough to see less snow than last winter right?
